Family of slain Pakistani immigrant raises $800,000 in US

The family of a Pakistani immigrant, who was killed in a carjacking incident in the US last week, raised around $800,000 in the US, reported Dawn. The family, however, had just sought $100,000.

Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year old Pakistan immigrant, was working as a driver in Southeast Washington when he was killed by two teenagers in a carjacking incident. The video of the attack soon went viral on social media generating a wave of sympathy for the family.

The GoFundMe campaign had received about $782,893 by Monday afternoon. The campaign had appealed for $100,000 — $20 each from individual donors — to meet the funeral and other expenses. People also left flowers at the scene of the incident.

“Although money will not fill the gaping hole his death has left in our family, it will help remove some of the stress and worry of daily living while we grieve and heal,” the family said in a statement. “We cannot thank you enough, we are overwhelmed by the kindness and support that everyone has shown.”

The report says that police have arrested two teenage girls who seem to have been involved in previous incidents of carjacking too.

“We know that at least one of them had participated in something similar back in January and were arrested for that as well,” Ramey Kyle, an officer from the Washington Criminal Investigation Division, told reporters in Washington. “So, it does seem that there is a pattern here,” he added.
