London/IBNS: Former Labour peer Lord Ahmed has been found guilty of sexual offences against two children in the 1970s.

Nazir Ahmed, formerly Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, was convicted of a serious sexual assault against a boy and the attempted rape of a young girl.

The 64-year-old former politician stood trial in Sheffield Crown Court for offences dating back more than 40 years.

Lord Ahmed was found guilty of sexually assaulting a boy under 11, in the early 1970s, and attempting to rape a young girl during the same period.

Ahmed, who was in Mirpur in Pakistan occupied Kashmir in 1957, denied the charges against him.

The British-Pakistani former peer, who appeared under his real name of Nazir Ahmed, is known for his tirade against India on Kashmir issue.

Justice Lavender, a judge of the Sheffield court, which was hearing the repeated sexual abuse happened in Rotherham when he was a teenager in the 1970s, will decide later when the former peer will be sentenced, BBC reported.

Former member of the House of Lords, Nazir Ahmed, was created a life peer in 1998 on the recommendation of the then UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Ahmed sat in the House until he resigned in November, 2020 after a conduct committee report concluded he had sexually and emotionally exploited a vulnerable woman who sought his help.

Ahmed's two older brothers, Mohammed Farouq, 71, and Mohammed Tariq, 65, faced the charges of indecent assault in relation to the same boy that Ahmed abused.

The jury found that Farouq and Tariq, who were deemed unfit to stand trial, did the acts alleged.
