Colombo/IBNS: People in Sri Lankan capital Colombo, suffering from a massive economic crisis, erupted in protest on Thursday evening, reports said.

More than 500 people held a protest march in Sri Lanka's Colombo late on Wednesday evening and even clashed with the police.

The protesters even gathered outside the house of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and shouted slogans.

The trouble started when the police attempted to disperse them.

The mob resorted to throwing bottles and stones at the police. The crowd could be only controlled only with batons and water cannons.

This comes after there has been a critical rise in the costs of food and essential items as the country is grappling with the worst economic downturn since its independence.
