Imran Khan had opposed the idea of giving province status to Gilgit-Baltistan at every step: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Islamabad:  Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier opposed the move of providing status of a province at every step to Gilgit-Baltistan region.

“Now at the time of election they [PTI] say they are thinking of giving a provisional provincial status [to GB],” Bilawal was quoted as saying by Geo News while addressing a public gathering in Nagar.

He wondered if Imran Khan was thinking like that then why was it not in the PTI’s manifesto.

"Imran had opposed the idea in January when the topic was raised during a cabinet meeting," he said.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan earlier announced granting the provisional-provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan region.

"One of the reasons for me coming to Gilgit-Baltistan is to announce that we have decided to grant Gilgit-Baltistan the provisional provincial status," he was quoted as saying by Geo News as reported by APP.

"We have taken this decision keeping in mind the UN Security Council's resolutions," added the prime minister.

The prime minister said that one of the many reasons Gilgit-Baltistan remained backwards was because it was "cut off" from the rest of Pakistan.

India, however, rejected Pakistan PM's latest move regarding Gilgit-Baltistan region.
