An Indian student has been shot dead inside his car in the Vancouver region of Canada, police said on Saturday (April 13, 2024).

The deceased Indian national was identified as 24-year-old Chirag Antil.

Giving details about the case, Vancouver Police said: "Officers were called to East 55th Avenue and Main Street around 11 p.m. on April 12 after residents heard the sound of gun shots. Chirag Antil, 24, was found deceased inside a vehicle in the area."

No arrests have been made so far.

Police said the investigation of the case is currently ongoing.

The Indian Consulate in Vancouver reacted to the development and posted on X: "@cgivancouver has learnt with great sorrow about the shooting & killing of an Indian national, Mr Chirag Antil, living in #Vancouver. We have approached the concerned Canadian authorities for more information in this regard. @HCI_Ottawa @MEAIndia@DrSJaishankar."

The deceased person's family members are trying to  collect funds to repatriate his remains to India

A fundraiser page created for Antil said: "Chirag Antil, an international student from Haryana, India, who arrived in Vancouver in 2022 for his studies, tragically lost his life due to a recent murder in the city. We urgently need assistance to raise funds for sending his body back to India."

Romit Antil, the victim’s brother from Haryana, Sonipat in India tells CityNews that Chirag was a kind-hearted person.

“My brother and I had a great relationship, we used to talk every day, day and night. I spoke to him last before the accident happened. He was kind of happy, he never had any issues or fights with anyone, ever. He was an extremely polite person,” Romit told the news portal.
