iPhone factory in China pledges to ensure safe passage after workers were seen escaping on foot
Beijing: A COVID-19-hit iPhone assembly factory in China has issued three notices where it said it will arrange safe passage for workers wishing to leave and a sanitised environment for those who choose to stay on, media reports said.
The factory issued the notices after videos emerged where workers were seen escaping the building.
After the videos went viral online, city authorities reportedly sent a pandemic task force to the plant.
The factory, run by Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group and billed as the world’s biggest iPhone facility, had imposed strict coronavirus control measures on campus about 10 days ago. The rules included daily tests and a ban on dining in canteens, the Post reported last week, reports South China Morning Post.
Workers had turned to social media to complain about living conditions, saying they were having to stay with Covid-positive colleagues, and raising concerns about further transmission and under-reporting of cases.
A large number of cities in China, including Wuhan, have gone into lockdown as the nation is following 'Zero Covid' policy.
