Moscow, Mar 23 (Sputnik/UNI) The Iraqi authorities detained 16 suspects in the case of the deadly ferry accident in the Tigris River near Mosul in the northern Nineveh province, Maj. Gen. Najim Abdullah Jubouri, the provincial military commander, said.

"Sixteen suspects in this incident have been detained. They are currently under investigation," Jubouri said, as quoted by Alsumaria broadcaster on Friday.

A tourist ferry with dozens of people on board capsized on Thursday.

According to preliminary data, the accident might have been caused by the excessive number of passengers.

The second possibility could have been the increased water level in the Tigris River provoked by the opening of floodgates in the Mosul Dam.

The Iraqi authorities have launched an investigation against Nofal Akoub, the governor of Nineveh, in connection with the ferry crash, local media reported on Friday as the death toll in the accident rose to 105.
