Islamabad may recognise Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Islamabad: A Twitter post by Pakistani Embassy in Turkey has triggered speculations that Islamabad officially recognized the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a sovereign state though it is considered a de facto state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus and recognised only by Turkey. Northern Cyprus is considered by all other states to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.

The post, shared via the embassy’s official Twitter account, detailed the schedule of a three-day visit by the consular team to “Northern Cyprus” that will take place between July 11– 13, reports Yeni Safak.

The tweet is seen as a significant step towards Islamabad recognizing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as speculations mount over whether an official recognition can be expected in the future, the news portal reported.

"Embassy’s Consular Team will be undertaking a 3 days visit to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from 11-13 July 2021. Available slots for community interaction are as follows: 12July: 5-8 pm,Lefkosa 13July: 6-9 pm,Girne Venue of community interaction will be conveyed shortly," read the tweet.

A coup in 1974 as part of an attempt to annex the island to Greece had prompted the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. This resulted in the eviction of much of the north's Greek Cypriot population, the flight of Turkish Cypriots from the south, and the partitioning of the island, leading to a unilateral declaration of independence by the north in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.
