Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Saturday to discuss the Ukraine crisis, his spokesperson said.

Israel has offered to play the mediator in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

A close ally of US, Israel publicly condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and sent humanitarian aid to the country but at the same time said that it would maintain communication with Kremlin.

Israel regularly bombs Iranian and Hezbollah military targets in next-door Syria where Moscow sends military support to President Bashar al-Assad in. However, communication with Moscow prevent Russian and Israeli forces exchang fire by accident.

Bennett's spokesperson said he flew to Moscow in violation of Sabbath law as Judaism allows this when the objective is to save human life.
