Tokyo/UNI: Japan in 2019 provided intelligence to the United States and Britain regarding People's Republic of China's (PRC) forceful detainment of Muslim Uyghur minority people Japanese press has claimed.
Kyodo news agency quoted an unnamed source reported that Japan showed US and UK evidence regarding forceful detention of Uyghurs.
After receiving such alarming intelligence, the United States stepped up criticism against PRC's alleged crackdown on Uyghurs in East Turkistan (Xinjiang autonomous region), the source said.
Britain too joined the United States in pressing Beijing over its crackdown on the Uyghurs, but Japan has only said it "is closely watching the situation with concern."
U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has put in place a series of sanctions on Beijing for alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs, such as visa restrictions on Chinese officials, heightening bilateral tensions.
The news of Japan providing intelligence to western countries regarding PRC shows that Japan is already sharing key intelligence with them behind the scenes amid calls within the government to join the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing alliance to better respond to challenges from People's Republic of China(PRC) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).
Five Eyes intelligence is an intelligence sharing group that includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
