Istanbul, Oct 7 (IBNS): Turkish officials have claimed that  Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi is feared to have been killed.

Khashoggi, a Saudi national,  went missing after he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday, media reports said.

A Turkish official told the BBC that initial investigations indicated he was murdered there.

Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations, saying it is "working to search for him", reported BBC.

Saudi Arabian state news agency SPA was quoted as saying by CNN that unnamed consulate official dismissed the reports.

The official strongly denounced these baseless allegations and expressed his doubt that they came from Turkish officials that are informed of the investigation or are authorized to comment on the issue," SPA reported as quoted by CNN.

Turkish police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wanted to avoid an "undesirable situation" over the missing person.

Speaking to reporters following the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party’s consultation meeting in the Kizilcahamam district, Erdogan was quoted as saying by Anadolu: “I still have good expectations. I hope not to come across a situation that is undesirable.”

As per a BBC report,  Jamal Khashoggi went to the consulate on Tuesday to obtain a document certifying he had divorced his ex-wife, so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Cengiz was quoted as saying by media that she waited outside the consulate for several hours but he never came out.

She even tweeted and said she could believe that the journalist has been 'killed'.

She also said that she is waiting for an official confirmation on the issue.
