Journalist questions silence of Islamic nations over Uyghur issue

Istanbul: Journalist Kunwar Khuldune Shahid has questioned several Islamic nations' silence on Uyghur issue.

He feels that several Muslim nations have defended China on the issue of treatment of Uyghur people, showing a 'hypocrisy' in their stand against France.

"But rather than condemning the treatment of Muslims – when the Uighurs so desperately need powerful people to speak up on their behalf – Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia, leading the Gulf states, have appeared to defend China, suggesting it has 'the right to carry out anti-terrorism and de-extremisation work for its national security'," the journalist wrote in his article published in The Spectator.

"Turkey, which is currently aspiring to replace Saudi as the leader of the Muslim world, is similarly largely silent on Uighur oppression. As for Pakistan, it suggests Uighur camps are a ‘non-issue’" it said.

"So it’s Macron’s plan to curtail Islamist separatism through the mainstreaming of mosques – a measure taken elsewhere – which has been deemed worthy of condemnation, rather than the systematic abuse of Muslims in internment camps," the article read.

The hypocrisy of boycotting France sticks out like a sore thumb when juxtaposed with the unanimous silence on other issues, the article read.

France has witnessed several terror attacks in recent times.

Once a poster boy of the all-embracing liberal West, who in elections defeated the far-right, French President Emmanuel Macron is now suddenly an enemy of the Islamic world with the Turkish president even calling him "mentally unwell".

Leaders of several Muslim countries have come down heavily on the French President for his efforts to keep his country free from Islamist terror as Macron faces one of the toughest challenges of his Presidency.
