Maldives crisis : Former President Nasheed asks India to send army, envoy

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IBNS) : Former  Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, in a tweet, has asked India to send an envoy backed by the army to end the political crisis in the Indian ocean island country.

"On behalf of Maldivian people we humbly request India to send envoy, backed by its military, to release judges & pol. detainees inc. Prez. Gayoom. We request a physical presence," he tweeted on Tuesday.

Nasheed, who is in exile, also wanted the US to stop all financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through US banks

His appeal came a day after the present President  Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency.

Yameen defied a Supreme Court ruling handed down last week, which revoked terrorism charges against nine leading opposition figures including the country's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Nasheed.

The court ordered the opposition figures, six of whom are being held in the country's main jail,  to be freed.

Yameen had former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom  and  the Supreme Court Chief Justice and Administrator of the Judicial Administration Department arrested.

India, China and the US have  issued travel advisories after President Yameen declared  emergency in the country.
