Murder of polio vaccinators in Afghanistan: Four people arrested

| @indiablooms | Mar 13, 2022, at 04:22 pm

Taliban security officials have arrested four people accused of killing four polio vaccinators and two Taliban affiliates in Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

Intelligence officials of Kunduz province said that the four arrested are part of the bond that was sent from Panjshir province to Kunduz to carry out assassinations, reports Khaama Press.

Those arrested have confessed the killings and added that they were paid 30,000 Afghani ($352) for each killing by a local commander known as “Markhor”, the news agency reported.

Head of intelligence directorate of Kunduz province Najibullah Haroon told Khaama Press that efforts are underway to arrest the complete bond and added that no one will be allowed to exploit the security of the residents of Kunduz province.

Last month, one member of the vaccination transit team was killed in Taloqan district in Takhar province, while four members of house-to-house teams were murdered in two separate incidents in Kunduz city, according to a statement from the UN Country Team.

Two vaccinators and a social mobilizer were killed in Emamsaheb district of Kunduz province.

In the wake of the carnage, the UN had immediately suspended the national polio vaccination campaign in Kunduz and Takhar provinces.
