North Korea fires 8 ballistic missiles towards East Sea

Seoul/UNI: A day after South Korea and the US ended their joint drills near the peninsular, North Korea on Sunday fired eight short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea, according to the South military.

Yonhap quoted the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying that the launches were detected from 9:08 am to 9:43 am from areas around Sunan in Pyongyang.

"While strengthening monitoring activities and vigilance, our military, in close cooperation with the United States, is maintaining a full readiness posture," it said.

This is North's 18th show of force this year and third since President Yoon Suk-yeol took office on May 10.

After US President Joe Biden's trip to Seoul and Tokyo, North Korea had test-fired on May 25 a suspected new-type ICBM and two apparent short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.

Meanwhile, the National Security Council will be meeting to discuss the North's latest missile launches.

The meeting will be presided by National Security Adviser Kim Sung-han.
