Los Angeles/UNI: A single-engine small plane crashed in the Santa Clarita area in Los Angeles County on Saturday, killing one person, local authorities said.

The aircraft crashed near Newhall Avenue and was engulfed in flames, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Xinhua reported.

"Sole occupant of downed aircraft in Newhall is deceased on scene," tweeted the Sheriff's Department, urging people to avoid the area.

A thick plume of black smoke in the air was seen from the accident site.

Firefighters were dispatched to the spot and the fire was doused.

"There was no extension into the surrounding brush/grass," the news agency quoted the LA County Fire Department as saying, adding that investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will handle an investigation into the incident.
