Karachi: An explosion  triggered by a gas leak in a multi-storey residential building in Pakistan's Karachi city left at least five people dead and 28 others injured on Wednesday, media reports said.

Police and Rangers teams immediately rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

The injured people were rushed to nearby hospital.

The intensity of the explosion had caused confusion regarding the cause of the explosion, however, an investigation by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) concluded that the explosion occurred due to leakage of natural gas, reports Geo News.

“A Stove burner was found at the crime scene. The burner has been handed over to area’s police,” the BDS said in its report as quoted by Geo News.

The explosion was reportedly so intense that window panes of nearby houses were damaged by it.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah had earlier taken notice of the incident and directed authorities to submit a report.

PML-N vice-president Maryam Sharif said she felt devastated by the news of the blast.

"Devastated at the news of blast in Karachi. My sincerest condolences to the grieving families and prayers for the speedy recovery of injured. I pray to Allah that the city of lights never recedes into darkness again and shines with peace and prosperity," she tweeted.
