Pakistan PM Imran Khan criticises PDM for insisting on Peshawar rally despite COVID threat
Islamabad/UNI: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday lambasted the opposition alliance, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), for its decision to go ahead with Sunday's rally in Peshawar despite the threat of COVID-19 and the denial of permission by the authorities for the same reason, Dawn reported.
Khan said that "The same PDM members who had wanted a strict lockdown and criticised me earlier are now playing reckless politics with people's safety,". "They are defying court orders and holding a jalsa when cases are rising dramatically,".
On Friday Peshawar's deputy commissioner had refused to grant permission for the PDM's public meeting, citing the rising spread of the novel coronavirus in the district, which they said had exceeded 13 per cent, adding that a gathering like this has the potential to help spread the virus and cases exponentially.
He warned that a case would be registered against the opposition leaders and the organisers of the rally if COVID-19 cases rose in the province.
