Pakistan : Supreme Court to give verdict on Nawaz Sharif in Panama Papers case

New Delhi/ Islamabad, Apr 20 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court in Pakistan will deliver its verdict on Thursday in the Panama Papers leaks case involving the country’s Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif and his family, media reports said.

The court will decide if Sharif has to quit over corruption allegations.

Any such eventuality may lead Pakistan into a turmoil as the country heads for elections and is in the midst of a sore relationship with India.

The controversy surfaced following publication of the so-called Panama Papers last year; 11.5 million secret documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca which documented the offshore dealings of many of the world's rich and powerful, implicating among others, Sharif's daughter Maryam and his two sons.

The case was started  on November 3, 2016 and the court held 35 hearings before concluding the proceedings on February 23, 2017.

Meanwhile, in a series of twits, Maryam sought to dispel the impression that her fathers is worried about the judgement.

"Whatever the verdict, am amazed & humbled to see the overwhelming support for Nawaz Sharif. For a leader, that's the most prized possession." she said.

"Not for once have I seen my father or any member of the family anxious or concerned. That's what happens when u entrust yr matters to Allah," she tweeted.

Radio Pakistan has quoted Punjab Chief Minister  Mian Shahbaz Sharif  as saying that the ruling PML-N party will accept court verdict in Panama Papers case.

Talking to newsmen in Kasur, he said civilized nations accept judgements of the courts.

He expressed the confidence that the Supreme Court decision will be according to law and the Constitution.
