Pakistan’s opposition rift wide open; PDM splits

The rift in Pakistan’s united opposition alliance- -the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-- has widened to an extent of splitting itself, reported Dawn. The Alliance has decided to part ways with two national parties - the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Awami National (ANP) Party.

PDM on Friday also announced that they would form a new coalition comprising five parties that would exclude the PPP and the ANP. The split in the movement, that aims to oust Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, came as a big relief to the ruling PTI in Pakistan.

The announcement was made by the PML-N after a meeting on Friday which was attended by senators of five parties in the block. The PPP and the ANP, however, didn’t attend the meeting.

The differences between the PPP and other parties were growing lately. The PDM has long been miffed over the lack of cooperation from these two parti1es. In the last some weeks, the alliance struggled to come to any consensus.

The selection of candidates for the post of opposition leader in the Senate also widened the differences, with both, the PPP and the PML-N, trading barbs openly.

Despite objections from the PML-N, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani of the PPP became the leader of opposition in the Senate. Earlier also, the PPP refused to agree on mass resignations of the PDM members from the provincial assemblies before the planned long march.
