Rishi Sunak tops second round of voting to succeed Boris Johnson as UK PM

London/IBNS: Former UK chancellor Rishi Sunak won the second round of voting on Thursday to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and country's Prime Minister.

He faces fierce competition from Penny Mordaunt, a junior trade minister, and foreign minister Liz Truss, who launched her official campaign earlier arguing she was the only contender with the experience to take the "tough decisions".

As per the election schedule, Boris Johnson's successor as Conservative leader is meant to be announced on Sept 5.

The party seeks to rebuild its popular support after it received flak by non-stop scandal.

Rishi Sunak was elected as Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015, which marked his entry into politics.

The 42-year-old Indian-origin leader got a full cabinet role for the first time when he was picked up by Boris Johnson as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.

Sunak was also fined for defying Covid-19 lockdown protocols and attending a 10, Downing Street gathering.
