Cape Town/Xinhua/UNI: South Africa has recorded 27 new cases of COVID-19, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,353.

The disease has caused five deaths in the country, with the current mortality rate standing at 0.37 perc ent, said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Tuesday.

To date, the country has conducted a total of 41,072 tests for COVID-19, according to the NICD.

Gauteng Province has had the highest number of COVID-19 cases (633), followed by Western Cape (325) and KwaZulu-Natal (179). The other six provinces all saw increases in COVID-19 cases.

"We wish to encourage South Africans to continue to heed preventative measures to assist in flattening the COVID-19 transmission curve," the NICD said.

The NICD expected the transmission rate to decline, following a number of interventions put into place, including a 21-day national lockdown which began on midnight Wednesday.

South Africa reported its first case on March 5 and now has the largest number of COVID-19 cases on the African continent.
