Cape Town/Xinhua: The South African government on Thursday reported four more confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number to 17.

The four new infected patients included the first case of local transmission, while the other three had a history of overseas trips, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in his latest update on the outbreak of the virus, known as COVID-19.

A 32-year-old male in Free State Province has tested positive after coming into contact with a local businessman who is from an infected Asian country, Mkhize said.

The second patient is a 38-year-old male from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province who lives in Turkey and was visiting his family in South Africa. He had travelled to the UK and returned to South Africa on March 7, 2020, according to the minister.

The other two patients included a 27-year-old female from Mpumalanga Province who had travelled to the United States and returned to South Africa on March 7, 2020, and a 43-year-old male from Johannesburg who had travelled to New York via Dubai and returned to South Africa on March 8, 2020, the minister said.

On March 5, South Africa reported its first case of COVID-19, a 38-year-old male who travelled to Italy with his wife, who also tested positive for the virus two days later.

Of the other previous cases, all had a history of European trips.
