Sudan : 16 people killed amid turmoil over past 2 days
Moscow, Apr13 (Sputnik/UNI) At least 16 people were killed amid unrest in Sudan over the past two days, local media have reported, citing police.
According to Al-Hadath broadcaster, the 16 people were killed in the capital Khartoum.
Sudan has been facing protests since last December. The demonstrations were initially sparked by the dire economic situation in the country but grew into a campaign against President Omar Bashir, who was in power for nearly 30 years.
The Sudanese military subsequently sided with the protesters and toppled the president, establishing a military council to govern the country for a transition period of two years.
The opposition, however, demands power transfer from the military council to a civilian government.
