This is a new beginning: Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa says after winning election
Harare, Aug 3 (IBNS): Zimbabwe's electoral commission has declared Zanu-PF candidate and incumbent President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, as the winner in the recently concluded presidential polls.
Mnangagwa defeated his opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, by over five percent of the votes, scoring 50.8 percent and 44.3 percent respectively.
However, like before, the Opposition has cried foul.
Chamisa's MDC Alliance has said that the result could not be verified.
Meanwhile, by virtue of winning the polls by over half the mark, the incumbent Mnangagwa has avoided a second run-off election against Chamisa.
Following his win, Mnangagwa tweeted that this 'is a new beginning'.
He said that the polls may have divided opinions, but the country is united in its dreams.
"Thank you Zimbabwe! I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe. Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams. This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity & love, & together build a new Zimbabwe for all!" he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, as the Opposition protested in Harare, the national capital, at least six people lost their lives.
The incident drew cautionary words from from the international community, which urged the local leaders to restrain from such behaviour.
The Opposition's allegation of vote rigging too was rejected by the country's electoral commission.
This is the first election in 40 years in Zimbabwe's history which did not feature its former President Robert Mugabe.
The 94-year-old Mugabe was ousted from power last year, following a coup, ending his 3-decade-long rule as President of the country.
Ironically, the tyrannical ruler refused to part support to his party, the Zanu-PF.
