Trump announces US to withdraw from UN arms trade treaty

| @indiablooms | Apr 27, 2019, at 06:50 am

Washington, Apr 27 (Sputnik/UNI) US President Donald Trump in a speech at the National Rifle Association on Friday said that the United States will withdraw from the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

"My administration will never ratify the UN Arms Trade Treaty," Trump said during the NRA’s annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. "I'm officially announcing today that the United States will be revoking the effect of American's signature from this badly misguided treaty. We are taking our signature back. The United Nations will soon receive a formal notice that America is rejecting this treaty."

President Barack Obama signed the ATT in 2013, but Congress never ratified it. The National Rifle Association has long opposed the treaty, which was endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2013.

The ATT is being opened up for amendment in 2020 and there are potential proposals that the United States cannot support, the White House said in a statement.
"The ATT fails to truly address the problem of irresponsible arms transfers, while providing a platform for those who would seek to constrain our ability to sell arms to our allies," the White House said.

The ATT purports to set international standards for trade in conventional arms, including everything from firearms to military aircraft, the statement said.
