UK General Elections end in a hung parliament, Theresa May likely to stake claim to form government

London, Jun 9 (IBNS): Neither the ruling Conservative Party led by Prime Minister Theresa May nor the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn were able to get a clear majority in the snap UK General Elections, according to media reports on Friday.

The elections were held on Thursday. Voter turn out was around 68 per cent, according to media reports.

However, Theresa May is expected to visit Buckingham Palace on Friday afternoon to seek permission to form a new UK government, despite losing her Commons majority, reported the BBC.

According to a BBC report, by 11am local time, the Conservative party had won 318 seats while the opposition Labour Party had won 261 seats. The Scottish National Party (SNP) won 35 seats, the Liberal Democrats 12 and the Democratic Unionist Party 10.

Tweeted Jeremy Corbyn, ".@Theresa_May thought that with the backing of the billionaires and the corporate elite, she could take your vote for granted."

The pound fell sharply in response to the Election results, media reported.
