Ukraine crisis: Russian strikes on Kyiv leave 31 dead, 159 injured

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday confirmed that 31 people, including five children, have died after Russia launched an attack on Kyiv on Thursday.

In his X post, the President of the war-ravaged nation said: "  Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko delivered a report. In Kyiv, emergency restoration works are ongoing at the sites affected by yesterday’s attack. All search and rescue operations have already been completed. Unfortunately, as of now, 31 people have been confirmed dead, including 5 children."

He said the youngest person to have died in the attack is just 2 years old.

He further said: "The youngest was just two years old. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased."

The attacks left 159 people. including 16 children, injured.

"In July alone, Russia used over 5,100 glide bombs against Ukraine, more than 3,800 'shaheds,' and nearly 260 missiles of various types – 128 of them ballistic. This can only be stopped through joint efforts – by America, Europe, and other global actors. Every engagement matters. Every day matters. I thank everyone who is helping Ukraine," she said.

This attack follows a wave of violence close and far from the frontline, including weekend assaults that killed at least 20 civilians and injured over 120, a prison attack on Monday that killed 16 inmates, a hospital strike that killed three and the death of five civilians in the east on Tuesday.

This violent pattern continues from June, when   the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country, HRMMU,   reported that Russia launched 10 times more missile and loitering munitions attacks against Ukraine compared with June 2024, killing 232 and injuring 1,343.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, stressed on social media that “international humanitarian law must be respected. All efforts must be taken to protect civilians. They are not a target.”
