UN General Assembly kicks off annual general debate

New York, Sept 20 (Just Earth News): As world leaders gather at the United Nations Headquarters, the General Assembly this morning began its annual general debate, which defines international responses to many of the global challenges of on Tuesday, including protracted conflicts, extreme poverty and hunger, the refugee crisis and climate change under the theme of “The Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world.”

The general debate is expected to run through Monday, 26 September.

The high-level segment of the General Assembly's 71st session started yesterday, with a summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants. World leaders adopted a political declaration as an outcome document at the summit, during which the UN saw a new addition to its family – a dedicated migration agency. Leaders of the UN and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed an agreement to officially make IOM a related agency of the UN system.
