UN voices concern over deaths of women right activist Frozan Safi in Mazar-i-Sharif

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed deep concern over the killing of activist Frozan Safi in Mazar-i-Sharif.

"UNAMA is deeply concerned at reports of killing of human rights defenders Frozan Safi in Mazar-e Sharif & Hijratullah Khogyani in Jalalabad. UN calls for a prompt, independent & impartial investigation. Civil society is not a target, impunity is not an option," UNAMA tweeted.

Frozan Safi was shot dead in Afghanistan recently, marking the killing of the first well-known women’s rights defender since the Taliban forcefully captured power almost three months ago.

Safi went missing on Oct 20.

She was identified in a morgue in Mazar-i-Sharif.

“We recognised her by her clothes. Bullets had destroyed her face,” Safi’s sister, Rita, who is a doctor, told The Guardian.
