US need to work with India to cut air pollution: Sanders

| @indiablooms | Feb 25, 2020, at 04:52 pm

Washington/UNI: The US should work with India to cut air pollution and create good  renewable energy jobs instead of making defence deals, Senator and Democratic frontrunner in the November presidential election, Bernie Sanders said as a new report warned that climate change could turn into a "catastrophic" threat to national and global security in the coming decades.

"Instead of selling $3 billion in weapons to enrich Raytheon, Boeing and  Lockheed, the United States should be partnering with India to fight  climate change," Sanders said in a tweet on Monday after US President Donald Trump announced defence sales of $3 billion to India at a public rally in northwestern city of Ahmedabad.

"We can work together to cut air pollution, create good  renewable energy jobs, and save our planet," Sanders said.

Recent polls in the US show that among all voters, the warming planet is now one of the most salient  issues in American politics. And for  Democrats, who live in one of the upcoming primary or caucus states, climate change is the clear number-two issue—second only to health care.

Sanders tweet came in a day Centre for Climate and Security, a nonpartisan security policy institute, in a report said, "Even  at scenarios of low warming, each region of the world will face severe  risks to national and global security in the next three decades.

"Higher levels of warming will pose catastrophic, and  likely irreversible, global security risks over the course of the 21st  century."

To avoid such impacts, the report, “A Security Threat Assessment of Global Climate Change: How  Likely Warming Scenarios Indicate a Catastrophic Security Future", recommends "quickly reducing and phasing out greenhouse gas emissions."
