US authorities on Friday said the man suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting at Brown University, which left two people dead, has died by suicide, according to media reports.

The suspect was found dead on Thursday evening at a storage facility, officials said. He has been identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente.

In a joint statement, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley, the Providence Police Department, the Rhode Island State Police, the Boston Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island confirmed Valente’s death.

Authorities said Valente was responsible for the killing of two students during a mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

“Our singular goal was to obtain justice for the victims of this senseless act, and tonight our community can begin to heal as we close the book on this unimaginable tragedy,” Attorney General Neronha said. “While we’ll never be able to prosecute this individual, I hope this result begins to provide some small measure of closure for the victims and their families.”

Neronha also praised law enforcement agencies for their efforts, saying officers had worked around the clock since the shooting to restore a sense of safety across Rhode Island.

According to the attorney general’s office, a Rhode Island state court issued an arrest warrant for Valente on December 18, 2025, charging him with two counts of murder and 23 felony counts related to assault and firearms offences. The warrant was issued based on an affidavit submitted by a Providence police detective.

Later that evening, law enforcement officials tracked Valente to a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire. After obtaining a federal search warrant, authorities entered the facility and found Valente dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

While at Brown University, he was enrolled in a doctoral programme but subsequently withdrew from the institution.
