Aadhaar logs 221 cr authentication transactions in August; face scans hit record high

New Delhi: Aadhaar authentication usage surged in August 2025, with over 221 crore transactions executed, exceeding both the previous month and the same period last year, according to data released by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

The figure reflects a 10.3% jump over August 2024, highlighting not only Aadhaar’s growing role in everyday services but also the broader expansion of India’s digital economy.

Officials said the numbers underscore how Aadhaar-based authentication continues to serve as a key facilitator — from enabling efficient welfare delivery to helping citizens voluntarily access services provided by government agencies and private firms.

Face authentication gains momentum

Aadhaar’s AI-driven face authentication technology has shown voluminous growth.

At least 18.6 crore face authentication transactions were recorded in August 2025, up sharply from 6.04 crore in the same month last year.

Cumulatively, over 213 crore face authentication transactions have been completed to date.

On September 1, UIDAI registered its highest-ever daily count — more than 1.5 crore — surpassing the previous record of 1.28 crore set on August 1.

The solution works on both Android and iOS platforms, allowing users to verify their identity through a face scan, while ensuring strict security standards. More than 150 organisations — including ministries, state departments, banks, NBFCs, oil marketing companies, and telecom operators — now deploy face authentication for service delivery.

e-KYC continues to expand

In addition to authentication, Aadhaar’s e-KYC service also saw heavy usage. During August, 38.53 crore e-KYC transactions were carried out.

UIDAI said e-KYC has become integral in banking and financial services, where it is improving customer experience and enabling ease of doing business.

With authentication volumes setting new highs, officials highlighted Aadhaar’s role in supporting secure, large-scale digital transactions that reinforce both governance efficiency and private sector service delivery.
