GST gets nod from most of the states

Kolkata, June 14 (IBNS) Almost all the states have finally lent their support to the Goods and Service Tax Bill, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said.

"All the states, except Tamil Nadu, have reached a consensus on not having a cap on GST," he said  while emerging out of a meeting of the Empowered Committee of state Finance Ministers in Kolkata.

The meeting is being attended by the Finance Ministers of 22 states and the representatives from seven others.

West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra is chairing the closed-door meeting, which is still going on.

The meeting is supposed to discuss the ways to resolve the differences between the states and the Centre on the GST which aims to bring the country under a unified tax regime.

The BJP-led NDA Government has been trying hard to push through the bill, but has so far failed in its bid in the face of strong opposition in the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling party is in a minority.
