IMFA eyes major capacity boost as Kalinganagar Greenfield project nears commissioning

Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA), India's largest producer of ferro chrome, on Tuesday said its greenfield expansion project at Kalinganagar (KNR 1) is progressing on schedule after receiving the required Consent to Operate (CTO) and Factory Licence.

The company said the process of commissioning the first furnace is underway, with hot metal tapping expected in the third week of August 2026. The second furnace is likely to be commissioned in September.

IMFA also said all four furnaces at its KNR 2 facility are now operational, helping the company achieve quarterly ferro chrome production of more than 80,000 tonnes for the first time.

During the quarter, the company dispatched around 14,000 tonnes of material, making a significant contribution to revenue and profitability.

As part of its sustainability strategy, IMFA has signed a long-term offtake agreement with Enfinity Global for an additional 65 MWp of hybrid renewable energy capacity, expected to become operational by June 2027.

With the new arrangement, nearly 40 per cent of the company's total energy consumption is expected to come from non-fossil fuel sources by the middle of next year.

The company also said its ethanol project at Therubali is nearing completion. While the project has faced delays due to the secondary impact of geopolitical uncertainties and monsoon-related disruptions, IMFA said there has been no material impact on its financial performance.

The trial run of the ethanol unit is now expected to begin in October 2026.

Commenting on the quarterly performance, Subhrakant Panda, Managing Director of IMFA, "With the Greenfield Project expected to be fully commissioned and stabilised by Q3, we will close out the year with operating smelting capacity of more than half a million tonnes.
