Indian Railways has recorded steady growth in the production of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, which are designed to offer enhanced safety, improved riding comfort and better operational performance.

During the current financial year 2025–26 (up to November 2025), Indian Railways manufactured more than 4,224 LHB coaches, marking an 18% increase compared with 3,590 coaches produced during the corresponding period last year.

Factory-wise data shows that the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, produced 1,659 LHB coaches during the period, followed by the Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli, with 1,234 coaches, and the Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, which rolled out 1,331 coaches.

A long-term comparison highlights significant progress in LHB coach manufacturing. Between 2014 and 2025, Indian Railways produced over 42,600 LHB coaches, representing an 18-fold increase compared with around 2,300 coaches manufactured between 2004 and 2014.

Officials said the expansion underscores Indian Railways’ sustained focus on modernising passenger rolling stock through wider adoption of LHB coaches, which are known for higher safety standards and lower maintenance requirements.

Indian Railways said it continues to support the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives by strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on imports.

The organisation is working to further augment production capacity to meet rising passenger demand while ensuring safer, smoother and more comfortable travel.
