‘No ally more important than India’: US envoy sparks stock market rally
Mumbai/IBNS: Indian equity markets rallied on Monday after newly appointed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor gave a positive update on the ongoing India–US trade deal negotiations, describing India as the White House’s most important ally, media reports said.
Speaking after assuming charge, Gor said there was “no other country more important as an ally than India”, underlining Washington’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
“Many of you have asked me for an update on the ongoing trade deal negotiations. Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow. India is the world’s largest nation,” Gor said.
“So it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there. While trade is very important for our relationship, we will continue to work closely together on other critical areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education and health,” he added.

Following the remarks, market sentiment improved sharply with Sensex recovering all its losses last week and inching ahead by around 100 points.
The NSE Nifty 50, which had remained in the red for six consecutive sessions, recovered nearly 200 points during the session and was last trading around 70 points higher.
The Nifty Bank index gained about 400 points, while midcap and smallcap indices also rebounded from the day’s lows, CNBC-TV18 reported.
Gor further stressed the importance of the India–US partnership as the world rapidly adopts new technologies.
“As the world adopts new technology, it is essential that India and the United States work hand in hand from the very start of this initiative,” he said.

Reiterating Washington’s long-term vision, Gor said, “No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, it is my goal as ambassador to pursue a very ambitious agenda. We will do this as true strategic partners, each bringing strength, respect and leadership to the table.”
Calling India a “friend” of the United States, the ambassador said President Donald Trump’s friendship with the Indian Prime Minister is “real”, adding that “two real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end.”
