7.6M earthquake strikes Honduras; Tsunami alert issued in Central America

Tegucigalpa, Jan 10 (IBNS): An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck in the Caribbean Sea, between the Coast of Honduras and Cayman Islands on Wednesday.

According to USGS, the quake was centered 202 km northeast of Barra Patuca in Honduras and 307 km southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.

No initial damage was reported though a tsunami warning was issued in Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.

The coasts of Mexico and Central America have been warned too.

Honduras' President Juan Orlando Hernandez has urged people to remain calm via a tweet.
