Nagpur/UNI: Maharashtra government has imposed Section 144 CrPC in Nagpur, and Maharashtra Highway Police (MHP) has canceled breath-analyser tests required to check drunken driving, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The tests have been cancelled to protect police personnel from the Coronavirus infection.

On Monday, a circular was issued by the MHP Additional Director General Vinay Kargaonkar in this regard.

The circular stated, "Outbreak of the Coronavirus has been reported in the State and police are vulnerable to the infection as they have to put the breath-analyser apparatus into the mouth of motorists to check whether they are driving drunk."

"Hence, traffic police personnel in all police units should not conduct breath-analyser tests for alcohol consumption by motorists," it added.

The circular also clarified that the test would be resumed once the situation gets normal.

The communique further read, 'It has become necessary to restrict gathering of people in large numbers at one place in view to contain the spreading of the Coronavirus and for the safety of people and public health.'

"In order to remove fear among people, for safety of people and health of the public and for their peace and safety, section 144 of the CrPC is being imposed in the city," it ordered.

"By this order, all social, political, cultural, religious, sports, trades exhibitions and camps, tourism, meetings, rallies, protests and other programmes have been restricted," it authorised.
