At least nine people died, and three others went missing after flash floods hit a wild camping site in northern China, with heavy rains continuing to wreak havoc in the world's second-largest economy.

The disaster struck around 10 p.m. Saturday in the upstream area of a river in Urad Rear Banner in Bayannur City, leaving 13 campers unaccounted for, according to the banner's publicity department, reported Xinhua news agency.

According to reports, one of the missing persons was later rescued.

A search operation is currently underway to find four others still missing in the area.

According to Xinhua report, 700 rescuers are currently searching for the missing people.

China has witnessed extreme weather since July.

The country experienced heavier-than-usual rains this year.
