Mumbai/IBNS: Schools and colleges are shut, several areas are waterlogged as heavy rain battered Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Monday, media reports said.

Schools and colleges have been shut as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday.

The civic body has advised people to not leave home unnecessarily.

The MeT office has warned of "extremely heavy rainfall" in some other areas.

The rain has left several roads waterlogged causing slow traffic movement.

Waterlogging has been reported from Andheri, Lokhandwala, Kanjurmarg, Sion Gandhi Market and Navi Mumbai, NDTV reported.

The local train service, which is the lifeline of the financial capital of the country, has taken a hit with trains running late by 15-20 minutes.

The airline service has been affected with several flights being delayed.

A wall collapse has been reported from Chembur but no casualty has been reported.
