Washington: A top US vaccine developer has said people will need to wear masks and maintain social distancing norms even after taking COVID-19 vaccine.

Even if some people receive a safe and effective vaccine next year, that doesn't mean people will be able to stop wearing masks and social distancing, Maria Elena Bottazzi, a vaccine developer at Baylor College of Medicine, told Business Insider.

“They automatically are going to say, ‘Oh great, I’m just going to get my little vaccine, and I can go back and do exactly the things I was doing last year’. That is absolutely not true,” Maria said.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the US surpassed 4.5 million-mark on Friday, reaching 4,558,994, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Besides, the country's death toll also rose to 153,311, according to the CSSE.

California has been the most affected state in the country with 500,057 confirmed cases, followed by Florida with 470,386 cases, Texas 435,956, New York 415,014, Georgia 186,352, New Jersey 181,660, Illinois 180,115, Arizona 174,010 and North Carolina 122,298.

New York has been the hardest-hit state in terms of deaths with 32,689 casualties, followed by New Jersey with 15,819 casualties, California 9,160 and Massachusetts 8,609.

Brazil has been the second most affected country in the world after the US. So far, Brazil has recorded 92,475 deaths and 2,662,485 confirmed cases.

According to the Varsity, global COVID-19 confirmed cases reached 17,516,264, while death toll stands at 678,226.
