Mentaid celebrates World Down Syndrome Day

Kolkata, June 8 (IBNS) Mentaid, Down Syndrome Support Group, Kolkata, South Kolkata Parasmani, Anwesha and Behala Bodhayan (all parents’ organisations) recently organised a unique celebration featuring talented young people with Down Syndrome on World Down Syndrome Day. Over fifty children participated along with their parents, teachers and well-wishers.

Triangular Park on Rashbehari Avenue came alive to the sound of ghungroos and music. They presented folk music, folk dance, classical tabla recital, gaudiya nritya, Tagore songs, Bollywood music and dance.

After the welcome speech was delivered by Mrs Iona Kundu, Founder Chairperson, Mentaid, the opening dance was presented by Sreya Gami representing Parasmani. It was followed by Basanta Utsab by the children and young adults of Mentaid. It was a vibrant show of  dance movements set to joyful spring time songs.

The other performers included Koel Basu, Korok Biswas, Medhan Jain, Shakyo Bhattacharya, Anurag Bhowmick, Surjo Sekhar Basu, Megha Dutta, Raju Kundu, Antara Kundu and Sukanya Sen. 

The performance which stole everyone’s heart was little Ishaan Banerjee’s dance to the accompaniment of the hit Bollywood song ‘Bam bam boley’ from the film Tare Zameen Par.

 The evening concluded with everyone swaying to the tunes of music.
