Prototype of solar power train unveiled in Jodhpur

Jodhpur, May 14 (IBNS) The first solar train prototype of the Indian Railways was unveiled in Jodhpur, Rajasthanon Friday and the first trial will be run in the next three to four days, according to media reports.
Part of the Indian Railways' Solar Mission -- to reduce the use of fossil fuel -- the coaches have been fitted with solar panels to power all the electrical appliances inside the train.
 
Each coach has 12 solar panels on the roof with capacity to generate 3.6 kilowatts of electricity under ideal condition. According to railway sources, 1.5 kilowatts is required to power the fans and CFL lamps in coaches.
 
According to media reports, Indian Railways expects to annually reduce 239 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and save nearly 90,800 litres of diesel per rake.
 
In the Railway Budget for 2016-17, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced plans to generate 1000 MW solar power by 2020.
