New Delhi/IBNS: With two fresh cases of the Omicron COVID variant being detected in Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh, the total number of cases of the strain has gone upto 35 in India, reports said on Sunday.

For both states, these were the first cases of the Omicron variant.

A 20-year-old who came from Italy to visit his relatives in Chandigarh, tested positive for Omicron.

After landing on Nov 22, he was in home quarantine and tested positive for Covid after retesting on Dec 1. A genome sequencing confirmed the Omicron strain.

The man, who was completely asymptomatic, got fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine during his stay in Italy. He is right now in institutional quarantine.

In Andhra Pradesh, a man who returned from Ireland, tested positive for the Omicron strain. He is currently in Vishakhapatnam.

States including Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat have reported cases of the new COVID-19 variant.

Meanwhile, India registered 7,774 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

A total of 132.93 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under Nationwide Vaccination Drive.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned nations in the Asia-Pacific region to boost healthcare capacity and fully vaccinate people in preparation for another round of surge in cases.
