OpenAI’s massive USD 445,000 salary for new job role reveals growing fear over self-improving AI

OpenAI is offering a salary of up to $445,000 (around Rs 3.7 crore) for a specialised safety researcher role focused on addressing growing concerns around advanced artificial intelligence systems that could eventually improve themselves.

The company, which is reportedly preparing for a public listing later this year, recently posted a job opening seeking a safety researcher to examine the risks associated with AI systems capable of training increasingly advanced versions of themselves, according to a report by Business Insider.

The listing comes at a time when fears around “recursive self-improvement” — the possibility of AI systems autonomously enhancing their own capabilities — have gained traction among industry leaders. The concern has intensified following rapid advances in coding tools developed by OpenAI and rival AI firm Anthropic over the past six months.

The role is part of OpenAI’s Preparedness Safety Team, with job aggregator platforms indicating that the posting went live earlier this month.

According to the report, the position offers an annual compensation package ranging from $295,000 to $445,000 and seeks “strong technical executors to support preparations for recursive self-improvement.”

The job description notes that the role involves anticipating risks that may not yet exist but could emerge as AI systems evolve.

"This work relies on reasoning about problems that might exist in the future, but might not exist now," the listing states.

"So it’s especially important that people in this role are thoughtful, strategic, and capable of long-term technical foresight," it adds.
