TCNSP hosts conference on 'bridging the world of science and arts'

Kolkata, October 15 (IBNS) The Tagore Centre of Natural Sciences and Philosophy (TCNSP) held a day-long conference on "Natural Sciences and Philosophy – a singular reality?" at the Bose Institute in Kolkata on Tuesday.

At this conference, personalities from the fields of education, art, culture and science  expressed,  through their talks, poetry, music and presentations the way worlds of science and art can indeed be bridged – based on, and inspired by, the thoughts and outlook of scientist Acharya  Jagadish Chandra Bose and world poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Bikash  Sinha,  Chairman of the TCNSP, said: “The process of fusion pioneered by these two great colossuses Jagadish Chandra and Rabindranath was neither an accident nor a coincidence. Letters exchanged between them clearly reveal that theirs was a conscious and deliberate effort aimed at a fusion . . . this paved the way for Bengal to flourish in the worlds of both science and arts and win international acclaim.”

Sinha adds, “It is indeed a pity that Jagadish Chandra and Rabindranath’s efforts in bridging   the two cultures were not continued; as a result, the creative possibilities of both science and arts got dampened. Not too many realise that  the mystery and romance of science provides a special   kind of creative dimension to the arts, and, likewise, the beauty and romance of the arts enriches the spirit of scientific temper, making science and the arts complementary to each other”.

Minister-in-charge, Parliamentary Affairs and Education (Primary, School and Higher Education), Government of West Bengal, Partha Chatterjee, said that it was unfortunate that very little or nothing has been published on Rabindranath Tagore’s deep interest in science, and, as a result, very little is known on this issue.

He assured the Centre that the state government would render all possible help in its research  and other activities.
