Ahmedabad Metro gets mega boost: Cabinet approves key airport corridor expansion

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, marking a key expansion of the city’s urban transport infrastructure.

The approved corridor spans 6.032 km and includes five stations—four elevated and one underground—namely Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport.

With the operationalisation of Phase 2(A), the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to a total of 77.63 km of active metro rail connectivity, significantly strengthening intra-city and inter-city mobility.

The total project cost, including interest during construction (IDC), is estimated at ₹2,169.04 crore.

Strengthening Urban Connectivity

Phase 2(A) is designed to enhance last-mile connectivity and provide seamless metro access to the airport, while linking key residential, commercial, and institutional zones that currently lack efficient public transport options.

The corridor is expected to integrate major urban clusters with the existing Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro network, improving accessibility across high-traffic and high-growth regions. The expansion is also expected to support upcoming infrastructure developments, including proposed sporting facilities in connection with the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.

Reducing Congestion and Emissions

By offering a reliable alternative to road transport, the metro extension is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion within Ahmedabad. Improved connectivity to the airport and key transit hubs is likely to ease vehicular load, shorten travel times, and enhance road safety.

The expansion is also expected to deliver environmental benefits by reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based transport, thereby lowering overall carbon emissions in the region.

Economic and Social Impact

Improved mobility is expected to enhance productivity by reducing commute times and enabling easier access to workplaces, business districts, railway stations, and bus terminals. The project is also likely to stimulate local economic activity, particularly in areas surrounding the new metro stations, attracting investment and encouraging urban development in previously underserved regions.

From a social perspective, the expanded metro network is expected to improve equitable access to public transportation, benefiting diverse socio-economic groups and enhancing overall quality of life by reducing travel barriers and improving access to essential services.

Employment Generation

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2(A) project is expected to generate employment for around 2,000 people during the peak construction phase. Additionally, approximately 500 personnel will be engaged in operations and maintenance once the system becomes operational.
