New Delhi, Jan 27 (IBNS) A suspicious balloon-like object was seen close to Delhi airport on Wednesday, media reports said.

"The Gurgaon control room has informed Delhi airport security that the balloon was seen moving from Gurgaon towards Delhi's Aaya Nagar airforce station," India Today reported.

More details are awaited.

The Defence Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that an Indian Air Force fighter jet intercepted and shot down a 'balloon-like' object in Jaisalmer area of Rajasthan on Tuesday.

"On 26 Jan 16, Indian Air Force Radar had picked up an unidentified flying object moving easterly in Jaisalmer Area. An Indian Air Force fighter jet intercepted the object which was found to be balloon of about 3 meters diameter," read an official statement.

"Due to heightened security alert, the balloon was shot down as it would have been carrying unknown payload," it said.

However, on analysis of the debris it was established that there was no dangerous payload.

The incident occurred on a day when the nation celebrated Republic Day.
