In a remarkable endurance feat, Bengaluru-based IT professionals Danish Abdi and Vrushali Prasade have become the first couple to complete a side-by-side open-water swim from Sri Lanka to India, crossing the Palk Strait via the historic Ram Setu route.

The duo completed the challenging expedition on May 7, swimming nearly 32 kilometres from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu in 10 hours and 45 minutes.

Battle against waves and strong currents

Videos from the expedition showed the couple navigating rough seas, shifting winds, and powerful ocean currents that repeatedly pushed them off course during the long swim.

One clip captured Abdi preparing for the early morning start before sunrise, while other visuals showed both swimmers enduring turbulent waters for hours before finally reaching Indian shores.

Strict safety and official monitoring

The crossing was conducted under strict safety supervision, with escort boats, paramedics, and personnel from the Indian Coast Guard accompanying the swimmers throughout the route.

Despite the support system, the swim remained physically and mentally demanding due to unpredictable sea conditions.

Months of training behind the feat

Both swimmers reportedly began structured training around four years ago and documented their preparation journey on social media.

The couple said the expedition was the result of extensive training, discipline, and planning, calling it a test of endurance, coordination, and mental strength.

Historic achievement

The feat has been described as a milestone in Indian open-water swimming, as Abdi and Prasade are believed to be the first couple to complete the Sri Lanka-to-India swim together along this route.

Their journey has also been widely shared online, with many praising their perseverance and teamwork.

The couple has stated that their goal in documenting the swim was to inspire aspiring athletes and adventure enthusiasts to take up endurance sports and challenge physical limits.
